Globalwarming Awareness2007 - Misconceptions

There are many misconceptions about global warming. Some believe that pollution causes global warming, but the fact is that global warming is the result of burning fossil fuels, coal, and oil that release carbon dioxide. Another misconception is that nuclear power causes climate change. Nuclear power actually reduces emissions of carbon dioxide when used in place of coal. As the temperatures are rising, glaciers are melting faster thereby causing the rise in the sea level.

The coastlines of the countries are reducing across the world. In this regard, we can mention the case of a tiny country called Maldives. Due to the rise in the sea level, this country is slowly sinking into the ocean. Though the process of sinking is slow and gradual, the scientists are expecting this country to totally submerge into the Indian Ocean. What a tragedy it will be to lose such a beautiful little country?

We can go on describing the harmful effects of global warming. Weather is becoming more extreme, the storms have become more powerful, and hurricanes have become more damaging. Floods that used to occur once in 100 years have now become routine. Species are becoming extinct everywhere, rain forests are depleting, ecosystems are shifting, trees weakened by drought and disease become brown and burn in more frequent forest fires. Global warming can be controlled and sustained if we start now.

There are a lot of issues that need to be addressed in order for us to help improve our environment. Though significant uncertainty remains regarding the amount of global warming that will occur over the next century or two, scientists agree that the trend will continue for the next hundred years even if fossil fuel consumption is dramatically reduced. The environmentalists also predict that there will be significant increase in the global temperatures and the sea level.

The related changes in weather patterns are expected to affect agricultural production. Global warming is likely to have a huge impact on the poorer countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It is because these countries are unable to adequately respond to the changes necessary to counter the effects of global warming. For these poor countries, global warming is not the most important issue as they have other grave issues to respond to. Poverty is rampant in these countries and population explosion is creating a lot of problems like unemployment and creating criminals out of small kids. Lack of education is causing the alarming increase in population as the majority of the people are not aware of the family planning methods. So, without government intervention, it will be difficult to address this global issue. The developed countries of the world like the USA should come forward and help the third world countries in countering this important issue.
